Heart Defects are present at birth (congenital) arise from errors early in the heart development that can be a reason of errors in the early heart development. There is no often clear cause to it. Genetics and environmental factors play an important role.
How the heart works with an atrial septal defect?
An atrial septal defect allows freshly oxygenated blood to flow from the left upper chamber of the heart to the right upper chamber. There it is mixed with the deoxygenated blood and pumps it into the lungs even though it is already refreshed with oxygen.
In the condition that atrial septal defect is large, the extra blood volume can overfill the lungs and increase the workload on the right side of the heart. If not treated the right side of the heart eventually enlarges and weakens causing increase blood pressure in the lungs and eventually become a cause of hypertension.
